FELINE LEUKEMIA VIRUS

**ALL CATS SHOULD BE TESTED**

Known as the "friendly cat's" disease, FeLV is transmitted from cat to cat through saliva and urine(cat fight's, mutual grooming, sharing litter boxes) and pregnant mothers may pass the leukemia to their young through the womb.  FeLV is not always fatal but often causes cancer, chronic infections, anemia, and death.

Since FeLV can only be treated, not cured, prevention is necessary to your cat protected.  If your cat ever goes outside(even onto a back patio) or is exposed to cats that do, you cat should be vaccinated with the FeLV Vaccine yearly.

FELINE IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS (FIV) TESTING

**ALL CATS SHOULD BE TESTED**

Commonly known as Feline AIDS, this virus is transmitted through saliva from cat bites.  The virus can be carried in the saliva for years with the cat showing few to no signs.  All kittens over the age of 8 weeks and newly adopted cats should be tested.  Testing every year is recommended for all cats that spend time outside, fight, with worse-than-average dental disease,  and are sick often unable to recover quickly.

Since FIV can only be treated with supportive care(antibiotics, blood transfusion, and fluids), prevention is absolutely necessary to protect your cat.  Spaying and neutering your cat, to decrease territorial fighting, is the best form of prevention.  Call us today (707) 578-1228 to set-up a FIV test for your furry purry friend.
