GIARDIA

**ALL CATS SHOULD BE TESTED**

Giardia is a single-celled parasite found in the intestines.  Giardia strains are shared by many species often including dogs, cats, wild animals, farm animals, and people!  Giardia is contracted through contaminated stool and water sources(ex. lakes, rivers, streams, and creeks).

Symptoms range from no diarrhea to mild to severe diarrhea, weight loss, mucus in the stool, and poor appetite.  All of the these symptoms are associated to other intestinal diseases, therefore accurate testing with an antigen test is necessary.  Due to the nature of giardia re-infestation is common, which can cause treatment to be costly and may require a series of tests to confirm true treatment.

If you are treating your dog for giardia, following step may help prevent re-infestation:

  • Remove your cat's stool immediately after he goes to the bathroom.
  • Wipe all four of your cat's paws and anus after he goes to the bathroom.
  • Be sure to clean out the litter box daily .
  • If your cat has an accident in the house, be sure to clean up the stool immediately and clean the surface down with a disinfectant.
  • Do not allow your cat to lick your face and wash your hands!
