INTESTINAL PARASITES

**ALL DOGS SHOULD BE TESTED**

Dogs can be the victims of many intestinal parasites or commonly known as "worms".  Not all worms are the same, some can be seen by the naked eye while others require the use of a microscope to be seen.  Fecal testing is the only accurate way to diagnose worms.  Not all worms respond to the same treatment and no single wormer works against all kinds of worms.

Below are a link to the four most common intestinal parasites found in Sonoma County:

ROUNDWORMS

TAPEWORMS

GIARDIA

HOOKWORMS

Yearly fecal testing is recommended for all dogs that ever go outside.  If your dog is diagnosed with worms, following these steps can help prevent re-infestation

  • Keep your dog away from other animal's stool.
  • After your dog goes to the bathroom, wipe all four paws and anus with a damp towel before entering the house
  • Using monthly heartworm preventive, like Heartgard Plus, can help prevent the contraction of some intestinal parasites,
  • Always wash your hands!
